Inscription.
These are the actual remains of a 35-year-old male elephant who was poached for his ivory in 1989. We have been working to ensure fewer African elephants suffer the same fate.

A Cautious Comeback
Although some are now protected in reserves, many elephants in Africa are still poached for their ivory due to global demand.

1980: 1,200,000 African elephants
1990: 600,000 African elephants
2006: 690,000 African elephants

We are Helping Elephants
WCS is working in Africa to reinforce and expand protected areas and decrease poaching. We are also working to reduce the demand for ivory through outreach and education.
