The U.S.S. Newport
A steam auxiliary Barkentine rigged gunboat built in 1897 by the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine.
From 1897 to 1907 she served the Navy commendably assisting in the capture of eight prizes during the Spanish-American War.
From 1908 to 1931 the Newport was assigned by the Navy to New York City and later to New York State as a school ship for the training of licensed officers for the American Merchant Marine.
Erected by State University of New York, Maritime College.
