Olinda
Hastings-on-Hudson, New York
— The Museum in the Streets® —
The Hopkes, owners of the sugar refinery on the Hastings waterfront that burned to the ground in 1875, named their stone mansion on Hopke Avenue Olinda ("beautiful" in Portuguese) after the city in Brazil from which their raw sugar was shipped. The photographs of the house and the family playing tennis were taken in the 1880s. In the early 20th century, Olinda housed a dancing school where local children—wearing white gloves—learned to waltz and fox trot.
