Industrial Hastings
The waterfront was the economic and industrial heart of the village from the 1830s to the 1970s. The English watercolorist George Harvey—who owned a marble quarry in Hastings and assisted Washington Irving in designing his home, Sunnyside—painted the quarry dock (inset) in the 1830s. An aerial photograph taken of the same area 130 years later shows the waterfront at its peak, with companies that included Anaconda Wire and Cable Co. and Zinsser Chemical.
