Squirrel Alley and Riverview Place
The squirrel at the entrance of the path to Riverview Place is the work of sculptor Raffaele Menconi (1877-1942), who also made the aluminum eagle for the Municipal Building and whose decorated Tuscan villas is on the left side of the walk. The distinctive hexagonal asphalt blocks on the pathway and many of the sidewalks of Riverview Place (pictured here around 1900) were made at the smoky Hastings Pavement Company (informally called the Fog Works) and can also be found on the walks of Central park in Manhattan.
