Women showed their courage and devotion to their country by leaving their homes in unprecedented numbers and volunteering their service in time of war. While not allowed in combat, they performed military duties, flew airplanes, were prisoners of war and died in service. Polk County women served in all areas and those at home served as spotters, flight instructors, defense industry and Red Cross workers.
