Inscription.
There seems to have always been a greenhouse within the prison walls. This greenhouse, which was added to the Penitentiary complex in the 1930's, was restored in the Spring of 2005 thanks to the generosity of our 2004 Supporting and Sustaining Members.

[Caption:]
The location of the greenhouse moved several times throughout Eastern State's 142 year history. This illustration from 1855 shows a greenhouse along the north perimeter wall. Illustration: The State Penitentiary, for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Lithograph by P.S. Durval and Co., 1855.
