Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Notable Inmate: Clarence Klinedinst
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), March 19, 2022
Thousands of inmates considered Eastern State Penitentiary their home. We believe prison plaster worker Clarence Klinedinst carved his initials into the wall of this courtyard in 1938. (They're above the two ground level windows, to the right of this sign.)
But "Kliney" wasn't planning to stay…

Having a bad day: Like many inmates, Clarence Klinedinst had plans to get out of prison before his parole date. But Klinedinst had advantages, including masonry tools, stoneworking expertise, and one of the closest cells to the outside wall.
