1. Against All Odds Marker
Inscription. The Confederate assault, known as Pickett's Charge, was actually led by three Southern generals—George Pickett, J. Johnston Pettigrew, and Isaac R. Trimble. The 12,000 Confederate soldiers involved in the attack emerged from the woods a mile to your front. On the left were Pickett's 5,500 Virginians and to the right, the divisions of Pettigrew and Trimble. Their battle line, stretching over a mile, advanced towards the Union position here on Cemetery Ridge. The determined Confederates were hammered by Union guns. Lieutenant Tully McCrae, First US Artillery, reported "the slaughter was dreadful." Against all odds, they continued forward.
