Mission of 3rd Marine Division
Execute amphibious assault operations and other such operations

Bougainville; November, 1943
• Participated in the fight against stiff and heavy enemy resistance
• Returned to Guadalcanal
• 423 Marines killed and 1418 wounded

Guam; July, 1944
• Captured over 60 square miles of territory and killed over 5,000 enemy soldiers
• 677 Marines killed, 3,626 wounded and 9 missing

Iwo Jima; February, 1945
• Faced determined enemy resistance
• Terrain heavily fortified by pillboxes, caves, etc. Progress was slow and casualties heavy during the first few days of fighting
• 1,131 killed in action and 4,438 wounded

Awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with 3 Bronze Stars Navy Unit Commendation Streamer with 1 Bronze Star

Post WWII
• The 3rd Marine Division was deactivated
