Pockets of Union soldiers, like the 26th Wisconsin, made short, desperate attempts to hold off the Confederate advance, but the overwhelming tide of Confederates forced the Union soldiers from the field.
Confederate General Jubal Early's division crushed the flank of the Union Eleventh Corps, forcing them back into Gettysburg.
