Photo #1: A 1942 poster by Allen Sandburg, issued by the office of War Information, Washington, D.C., in remembrance of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor features a quotation from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, "We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vein” Photo #2: torpedo planes attack "Battleships Row" as viewed from a Japanese aircraft. West Virginia, Oklahoma and California, torpedoed marked by ripples and, spreading oil, listing to port. Torpedo drop splashes and running tracks visible at left and center. at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers, 353 fighter, planes, bombers and Torpedo planes attacked in two waves. Four U.S. Navy battleships Were SUI (all were raised except the USS Arizona, which remains today a memorial park the resting place of 1,102 sailors and marines killed on the ship during the attack .) The Japanese also hit three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship and one minelayer. 188 US aircraft were destroyed, 2403 Americans were killed and 1178 wounded. The attack was a profound shock to the country. Precipationing Americas entry into World War II.

Memorial History
This plaza and Pearl Harbor Memorial were made possible with sponsorship from Wanda Pope Felton, The Polk County Veterans Council, and local individuals and organizational philanthropists. Mrs. Felton donated, this memorial to honor her late husband, Navy Captain Lester Pope who manned the base hospital while she and her 15 - month - old daughter sought refuge in the Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Stations Officer Quarters basement. On December, 2014, the 73rd anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, this monument was dedicated to honor the generation of Americans who fought in World War II.
