1. The Wabash & Erie Canal Marker
Inscription. Past this point flowed the Wabash and Erie Canal begun in 1832 and dedicated July 4. 1843 at Fort Wayne. In its final phase the canal extended 459 miles from Maumee Bay to Toledo, through New Havens southwestward to Layette and then to the Ohio River at Evansville. It was abandoned in 1874 and the last boat was seen on the canal in 1882.
