Ruta de Negocios / The Business Route
One of the emblematic buildings of Silao is undoubtedly the temple of Santiago Apóstol, which is located in the center of the city. The cult of Santiago Apóstol is very popular in the area of Guanajuato, Querétaro and parts of Hidalgo, because it is associated with the military and religious culture brought by the Spaniards in the early sixteenth century, who from the time of the so-called "reconquest" (VIII to XV centuries), in which the Christian armies fought against the Muslims in the
Iberian Peninsula, they used the war cry "Santiago y cierra España", as a war cry, believing that the apostle Santiago El Mayor was fighting with them in battle. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico in the sixteenth century, they used Otomi warriors to fight and pacify the regions north of the Valley of Mexico, populated by indigenous groups known generically as "Chichimecas." These Otomi captains were Christianized, inheriting the cult of Saint James as part of the religious and military culture of the Spanish.
Therefore it is not surprising that one of these Otomi captains, the famous Don Nicolás de San Luis Montañés, famous for conquering the Chichimecas, called the town he founded in 1537, "Pueblo del Glorioso Señor Santiago Apóstol del Llano Grande de Silao" and that a few years later a temple dedicated to this particular saint was erected in the heart of the town, whose cult has since been a very important part of the identity of the inhabitants of Silao.
The original construction of the parish began around 1560, according to some sources by mandate of Don Vasco de Quiroga himself, Bishop of Morelia. However, the current building was built in the late seventeenth century and was completed in 1728. Its neoclassical style is evident in the beautiful bearing of its façade.
It is the scene of one of the main festivities of Silao, which is celebrated every year from July 15 to 31 with masses, processions and a popular fair.
