Intended as a replacement of the M4 Sherman, a prolonged development period meant that the M26 was only used in combat during the final months of World War II. Most notably, the M26 was the type of tank used by the 9th Armored Division's dash to take the Lundenorff Bridge during the Battle of Remagen. The M26 was used extensively during the Korean War, where it outmatched the Soviet T-34/85 in terms of protection and firepower, but had issues navigating the hilly and muddy terrain. Due to this, the M26 was replaced in 1951 by the M46 Patton.
Late in World War II the 773rd Tank Battalion of the Louisiana National Guard was outfitted with Pershings.
