Inscription.  The smokehouse served as a processing and storage location for pork being cured through a salting and smoking process. The Mable family's smokehouse was built about the same time as the main house in the 1840s, making it one of the oldest surviving smokehouses in Georgia.

It is a frame building with a pitched roof and no windows. Slats in the upper portion of the front and back walls provide the only ventilation. The original floor was dirt with a fire pit in the center. Inside the smokehouse you can see large beams where the meat hung while smoking, as well as hand cut nails and smoke-blackened boards.

In the fall 60 to 80 hogs were killed and the meat was preserved for use later in the winter or it was sold. Butchered meat hung for months while a smoldering fire preserved the meat by drying it out. Cured meat was a valuable commodity and the smokehouse would have been secured against theft and animal damage.
