Inscription. In commemoration of the safeguarding
of the
Great Seal of Georgia
and the
unfinished acts of the
legislature, 1864 Within five hundred feet east of here lived Georgia's wartime Secretary of State, Nathan C. Barnett. At midnight November 18, 1864, just before the arrival of the Federal army, he and his wife, Mary, buried the Great Seal under their home. His wife hid the unfinished acts of the legislature under the pig pen. These, with the Great Seal, were returned unharmed to the state legislature at Macon in February, 1865.

Erected 1939 by Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, Historic Sites and Monuments.
