1. Samuel Bemis Marker
Inscription.
In Honor of
Samuel Bemis
The second settler of Spencer grandson of Joseph Bemis who came from England and settled at Watertown in 1640. In 1721 near this monument he built a log cabin and later the first framed house in town. He was a man of courage, fortitude and fidelity, and by his industry acquired a handsome estate. He reared a family of eight children who with numerous descendants have borne an honorable part in the town's history. For his many virtues and for what he did in laying the foundation of a prosperous community, his name with that of his wife, Sarah Barnard, is held in grateful remembrance by their descendants who have erected this memorial A.D 1901.

Samuel Bemis died in 1776, aged 84, and was buried in the old cemetery where his headstone may still be seen bearing this inscription.

“Where nothing dwelt but beasts of prey
Or men as wild and fierce as they,
Our rude forefathers did repair
And built us towns and cities there."

Erected 1901.
