he Sand Hills Light Station is significant for two reasons. First, it was the last traditional attended light station constructed on a new site in Michigan at a time when the Lighthouse Service was beginning the transition from attended lights to automated lights and radio beacons.


Second, it represents a unique example of lighthouse architecture. This particular, functional design for a combination keepers dwelling and tower, utilizing the most modern materials available at the time, has not been used at any other site on the Great Lakes or elsewhere in the United States.
