There was a public school for white children in Rehoboth Beach as early as 1884. In 1901, that building was replaced by a larger school and by 1908, a two-story school serving elementary through high school grades was built on Rehoboth Avenue here at the site of the city hall.
A separate school served African-American elementary students for many years, but that was located outside city limits. Although a handful of African-American students attended traditionally white schools earlier, by 1968 the United States Civil Rights Commission certified that Delaware had desegregated its educational system.
School aged children of all races now attend Rehoboth Elementary School, which is within city limits, or Beacon Middle School or Cape Henlopen High School outside city limits.
