“Traders Rest” also known as Traveler’s Rest was located at this site.

It was not an original Pony Express station.

The original Pony Express stations going south from Salt Lake City were Salt Lake City and Rockwell’s and they were 20 miles apart.

Starting July 1, 1861 the new mail contract not only required the same twice a week Pony Express trip from Salt Lake City to California but also a near daily stagecoach trip going both ways. The 20 miles between the existing stations were too far apart for this new operation.

A new station was required about halfway and “Traders Rest” was created. Ebenezer Thayne took over operation of the station by the end of August 1861 and thereafter. ©2002 Joe Nardone
