All Saints in Sioux Falls in Minnehaha County, South Dakota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Seacoast Gun
During the Civil War, the gun was shipped to West Point Foundry at Cold Springs, New York, where nine-groove, right-handed rifling was added to its barrel Grooves caused shot to spin, and the spinning action increased velocity, stability, accuracy, and range. After banding was added to strengthen the gun, solid, shell, canister, case, or grape shot could be fired.
This Model 1845 seacoast gun was one of dozens installed in federal forts built along Chesapeake Bay to protect Washington, DC.
The local Joe Hooker Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal brotherhood of Union Army veterans, obtained the gun under an 1896 federal law. It was placed near Central School and in 1933 was moved to Lyon Park.
Erected 2006 by the Minnehaha County Historical Society and Jane O'Connor in honor of Regina Pyper; and the Sioux Falls Board of Preservation and in honor of MarieClaire Christenson.
