Regarding Old Dawson County Jail. It was the county's third jail, after fire destroyed the original 1858 jail and its 1871 replacement was deemed to be “wholly unfit for the purpose designed” just a decade after it was built. The third jail was built on the same site as the second jail by McGinty Construction Co. of Athens, Georgia at a cost of $3,670. After 90 years of service, it was replaced by a new jail in 1971.
