Freedom
Out of the east came a cold hard wind,
And it whistled through our town,
Shrilly it shrieked the dreaded news,
That one of our own was down.
“Surely that wind is mistaken,”
I heard one of my neighbors say,
“I know I saw young Phil recently.
Might even have been yesterday.”
“Good Sir,” says I, “He's in the Marines.
Been gone a good while by now,
In one of the islands, or some such place.”
As the wind continued to howl,
And the wind just continued to howl and moan,
driving ice right through my soul.
And I heard in the wind about the desert sun
and the death of young Phil Scarborough.
How he fought and died for his country.
In the desert, half a world away.
How he fought and died with his comrades,
In the dust and the sand that day.
So the Marines came here amongst us,
Bearing their precious charge back home.
Back here to Georgia they brought him,
Never again will he roam.
And the people turned out by the hundreds,
To honor the young Marine.
And the people wept by the hundreds,
As his praises we all did sing.
And we followed him out to the graveyard,
on a cold, dark November day.
And as we wept, so did the heavens,
As we laid him to rest that day.
