1. Gwendolyn Brooks Marker
Inscription. Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks moved to Chicago at six weeks of age and stayed her whole life. She became a leader in the Black Arts movement. Her life and work were rooted in the poor, African-American communities of Chicago's south side. She wrote ballads and sonnets, lyrical and narrative verse, blues rhythms and unrestricted free verse. Awarded more than 75 honorary university and college degrees, Brooks also gained appointments as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress and Poet Laureate of Illinois.
