Inscription. Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton became a living example of healing through creativity. Following a lifetime of clinical depression and personal loss, she began creating art in 1977, focusing on her subject, not on the canvas. She confronted grief in a two-step process where she would first draw an emotion, and then write about it. Her work gained national and international recognition and was exhibited in a one-woman show at the Smithsonian Institution. She died in 1993 at the age of 83.
