Dundee in Monroe County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Old Village Jail
Officials could not place more than one person in the jail at one time because two people could lift the jail and allow one to escape. We have heard many stories including the one about four inebriated farmers who were locked up for the night and in the morning the one farmer had to go milk his cows so the other three lifted up the jail for him to escape. After he milked the cows he returned to the jail.
Mike Yeck procured the old jail and refurbished it to be used during the 1974 sesquicentennial. During the celebration it was filled with loved ones and "arch enemies” participating in the events. It also traveled to near-by towns as an advertisement to join the fun in Dundee.
The jail was loaned to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department to be used as an exhibit at the Monroe County Fair from 2001 through 2021. It returned home to Dundee's Old Mill Museum in August of 2021.
