The captain of the ferry boat Eureka guides the vessel into a slip behind the Ferry Building, circa 1940. Without radar or other aids to navigation, the maneuver could be challenging, particularly in fog, darkness, and stormy weather.

Nowadays ferry captains have radar, radios, and an array of sophisticated equipment to assist with safe navigation on the Bay. Ferries provide commuters and travelers with a relaxing and scenic alternative to congested bridges and highways.
