Inscription. When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, Rickenbacker joined the Army hoping to be a part of the Air Corps. Because he was known as a race car driver and was considered too old for flight training at the age of 27, he was assigned as a driver for military leaders in France. He continually longed to fly. Employing his gift for persuasion, he talked his way into flight training despite his age and lack of experience. After only 25 hours of flight time, he was promoted to First Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. With a few victories under his belt, he was again promoted, this time to the rank of Captain. Fighting against the infamous "Flying Circus" air squadron of Baron von Richtofen, Eddie attained 26 victories and became a living legend, known as America's "Ace of Aces."
