U.S. Navy. . On April 30, 1798, the U.S. Navy was created by an act of Congress as the Department of the Navy. U.S. Navy interactions through the years include the War of 18 12 with Great Britain; the Mexican War, 1846-1848, the American Civil War, 1861-1865, which saw the end to wooden ships and the birth of ironclads; the War with Spain, 1898; world war one, 1914-1918, where the capture of the Philippines helped defeat the German submarine threat and women were accepted into the U.S. Navy. The brunt of world war two, 1941-1945, in the Pacific, was borne by the U.S. Navy. Submarines cut Japanese supply lines and air craft carriers destroyed the Japanese fleet; in the Atlantic, the Navy helped defeat the German u-boats, and spearheaded the invasion of Europe. The Korean Conflict, 1950-1955, provided amphibious support (Inchon). Vietnam, 1962-1975, the Riverine forces were used to destroy the Vietcong sanctuaries in the Delta area. Persian Gulf War 1990-1998, provided support to fire weapons at targets up to 800 miles away and air support from aircraft carriers. Whosever can hold the sea, has command of everything.
