Inscription.
United States Coast Guard. . As requested by Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, the First Congress on 4 August 1790 authorized the construction of ten armed cutters to guard the coasts against smugglers and pirates. Known first as the Revenue Marine, then the Revenue Cutter Service, and finally in 1915, the Coast Guard. With the addition of the Lifesaving and Lighthouse Services, Merchant Marine Inspection Functions, and the Coast Guard Reserve and Auxiliary, the missions expanded from the original to add search and rescue, recreational boating safety, ice-breaking operations, and environmental protection. 1967 saw the transfer to the Department of Transportation. Serving as part of the Navy, dedicated men and women of our oldest continuous maritime service fought in all major conflicts and have been and are “Always Ready”.
