1. Jeanne d'arc Willow Marker
Inscription. This willow tree began as a spring from a tree taken from the grounds of the birth place of Jeanne D'Arc of Dormery, Haute Marne, France. In May 1919, sprigs of this willow we're sent a number of Americans Legion Posts by the University of Wisconsin. It was planted in Mellen in 1924. When sent to Wisconsin, these sprigs were accompanied by a letter from American general John "Black Jack" Pershing, which said in part. "Let us hope that to the school children of Wisconsin, these trees will typify by their strengths and stature, the life, force, and ideals of their fathers, the American Soldier. who crossed the ocean and gained victory in order that their children might be free." It was under these "willows," five centuries ago, that the "Maid of Orleans" heard the divine "voices" that were to send her on her glorious mission.
