Alexander the Great conquered the Holy Land in 332 BCE and extended Greek culture to the region. after his death, Judah became embroiled in the struggle between Ptolomies and the Seleucids; eventually coming under the control of the Seleucids, Antiochus IV, a Seleucid, was less tolerant of the Jews. He plundered the Temple and tried to convert it to a temple in honor of the god Zeus.

This ultimately led to the Maccabean revolt, led by a priest named Mattathias and his son Judah Maccabee. The revolt set up the Hasmonean Kingdom, which continued for about 100 years until the Romans took control of the region in 63 BCE.
