Avondale in Cincinnati in Hamilton County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Iron Age
(circa 1,200-586 BCE)
This period takes its name from the metallurgic advances that led to the smelting of iron. The Egyptian influenced Canaanite cultures declined, replaced by the Israelites, the "Sea peoples" or Philistines, and the Phoenicians who lived along the coast. There were many fortified cities, including the first fortified city of Jerusalem. This was the period of the "Kings of Israel", initially united and then split into the Kingdom of Israel in the north and Judah in the south.
The Kingdom of Israel lasted until about 722 BCE, when the Assyrians, forced the Ten Tribes of Israel into exile. Babylon then superseded Assyria and ultimately conquered the Kingdom of Judah, destroying the Temple of Solomon. Excavation in Jerusalem has uncovered artifacts of everyday life as well as weapons from both the Israelites and their Babylonian attackers. These are all covered by a thick, charred layer of destruction.
