1. The First United Methodist Church of Sonora Marker
Inscription. This church was chartered and the first Board of Stewards elected on May 14, 1892. The pastor in charge was the Rev. D.O. McAllister who walked the 35 miles from Sonora to Ozona to serve as minister for the Sonora-Ozona parish. Methodist circuit riders served the area as early as 1875 but regular meetings were not held until 1890.

The first church building was built in 1894 on the site of the present post office at a cost of $1,419.00. The existing church was completed in Jan. 1925 but has been expanded and remodeled several times - the education wing and parsonage in 1958 and the sanctuary was completely remodeled in 1991.

In April 1925, women of the church organized as the Missionary Society. This dedicated group took possession of 50 donated sheep which were cared for by members. The project ended in 1932 with over $5000.00 in needed church funds.

On May 14, 1992 this church celebrated its first century of service to God and the community.
