Inscription.
All along the Mahoning River steel and iron mills were erected to take advantage of its resources. These operations required a vast amount of water which was pumped from the river and discharged back into the river after use in mill operations.

The valve you see here on display was used for that purpose by the Youngstown Iron and Steel Company whose mill was erected here in 1915 and drew water from behind the old dam that once traversed the river at this location.

Another prominent industry was the flour and grist mills. The grindstones you see on the display here were found in the river not far from this location and are from one of the several grist mills which operated here for over a century.
