1. A Tight Fit Marker
Inscription.
This model shows a boat that has entered Lock 29 from the north. It is heading south – upstream – towards Akron. Most locks were 90 feet long from gate to gate. Walls were 15 feet apart. Boats were up to 75 feet long and up to 14 feet side, so they nearly filled the lock.

[Caption:]
1. Boat approaches the lock from the lower, downstream level of the canal. The lower gates are open and the boat enters the lock.
2. Lower gates and their wickets, or valves, are closed. Wickets in upper gates are opened, allowing water to rise to the canal’s upstream level.
3. Upper gates are opened and the boat exits.

Water Levels in the Lock
The lower mark on the wall in front of you indicates the downstream water level in the lock – four feet – when the boat enters the lock to head toward Akron.

The upper mark shows the upstream water level – 15 feet – when the boat exits the lock into the aqueduct.
