Laporte in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
"Freight Gate"
This "freight gate” was originally on Court Street and was used similarly as an actual freight entrance for the Courthouse. Everything from paper supplies, garbage and prisoners passed thru this gate both ways.
When the wrought iron fence that surrounded the Courthouse Square was removed in early 1950's, much of it went to private homes in Sullivan County. This gate went to a home in Lopez and was placed in front of a carriage barn on Church Street. Over time cars replaced the horse drawn carriages. The custodian for the Courthouse at that time, took out his carriage house and replaced it with a garage. The garage walls were wider than the width of the gates that had been cemented into the ground, so they were opened all the way to allow cars through the garage doors and le[f]t to stand there for decades.
