Hester van Lennep
Amsterdam, 8 juli 1910 - Doesburg, 1 januari 2000
On May 1, 1940, Hester van Lennep opened her Institute of Skin Care at the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Then in 1942, as the persecution of the Jews by the German occupying forces took on more serious forms, she, along with her colleague and friend Pauline van Waasdijk, helped Jewish children from the nursery opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg to go underground into hiding. Later she joined with a Jewish person, Sαndor Baracs, who had gone underground and whom she had been taking care of, an employee of the illegal resistance newspaper Trouw. As a courier, she transported weekly copies by bicycle from the printer to the various distribution addresses. On January 20, 1944, Hester and Sαndor were married. They did that illegally and in the greatest secrecy, for a marriage between a Jew and a non- Jew was banned by the Nazis. The couple survived the war.
In 1985 Hester van Lennep received the Yad Vashem Award from the State of Israel as Righteous Among the Nations.
