Inscription. Elected in 1988 to represent district 56 in Nashville, she became the first female speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives in 2011. She chaired the state Republican Party (2001 - 2004) and has been an active member of the Tennessee State Museum Foundation, The National Foundation for Women Legislators, David Lipscomb University Advisory Council and Leadership Nashville.
