Inscription.
Over several years, Beebe was able to document many deep-sea animals, and he made the first studies of the way light changes at depth, all under the threat of leaks, fires, and seasickness.

"I sat crouched with my forehead pressed close to the cold glass, that transparent bit of mother Earth which so sturdily held back nine tons of water from my face."
—William Beebe

Rough seas sometimes rocked the boat on the surface, transmitting motion down the steel cable, causing the Bathysphere to swing from side to side like a pendulum, knocking about the two men inside.

Beebe and Barton performed "contour dives", mapping Bermuda's underwater geography. Traveling along the ocean floor, the Bathysphere narrowly avoided smashing against underwater cliffs.
