1. The Rock Garden Marker
Inscription.
First opened to the public in 1917, the BBG Rock Garden showcases a variety of compact plants suited to growing in small spaces:

Woodland • Large woody shrubs and trees' (including viburnams, maples, pines, and spruces) form a verdant backdrop to the Rock Garden.

Acid-loving Plants • These plants require acidic soil conditions. Many belong to the Ericaceae family, including heaths, azaleas, and rhododendrons.

Dry-tolerant Plants • No rain? No problem. These plants inhabit xeriscapes, landscapes where the rainfall is only 10 to 20 inches per year. Some have adaptations like succulent leaves to store water.

Aquatic Plants • The pond is home to floating plants such as water lettuce, while the pond edges are highlighted with sedges and marsh marigolds.

Scree • In the wild, this group of dwarf alpine plants can be found near mountain tops, flourishing in harsh, exposed stony fields formed by erosion.

Evergreens • Cone-bearing plants predominate in this section, particularly the dwarf or low-growing forms of conifers such as yews, junipers, dwarf spruces and firs, and false-cypresses.
