Inscription. In this approximate location once stood the Milburn Methodist Chapel built sometime between 1787 and 1788 by members of the Milburn Methodist Society. Referred to as the Milburn Meeting House or Milburn Chapel, it was one of the first Methodist buildings in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1812 John Milburn III donated the land on which the meeting house and graveyard stood to the Methodist Episcopal Church. During the Civil War the chapel was significantly damaged. Rather than repair the chapel, the congregation decided to build a new church, Emmanuel United Methodist Church, located on Martinsburg Pike in Stephenson, Virginia. In the late 1800s the Milburn Chapel was dismantled and the lumber sold to a local farmer to build a barn. In 1944 the foundation stones were used to repair the wall of the Milburn Cemetery.
