The Land is Rising... and Shaping the Shore
About 10,000 years ago, glacial ice covered the North Shore and caused the earth to sag. When the ice melted, a great weight was removed and the land began to rise or "uplift." Uplift, along with falling lake levels, left shorelines inland. Uplift also forced all North Shore rivers to cut through rock to reach the receding Lake Superior, leaving the falls, rapids and gorges we enjoy today.
Differential Uplift has Tilted Old Shorelines
