1. Luling Marker
Inscription. Once known as the "toughest town in Texas," Luling was established in 1874. Since it was originally founded as a railroad town as well as a rowdy center for cattle drivers along the paths of Chisholm Trail, Luling was not highly recognized until a significant discovery of oil by Edgar B. Davis. This discovery soon led to the opening of an oilfield ranging from 12 miles long and two miles wide. The economy quickly moved from the railroad and agriculture to almost entirely oil. The Luling Oil Field was producing over 15 million barrels of oil per year and was the primary base of Luling's economy for more than 60 years.

Luling is famous for barbecue, watermelon, the farmers' markets and the train, but there is much more to see and do. Come for the day or stay the week, while you enjoy Luling's rich cultural heritage with a variety of historic jewels and attractions, demonstrations, great restaurants and unique shops.

The Guadalupe River Heritage Tour includes the 10-county statutory district of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. Each location highlights some of the points of interest, attractions and historical background. Shown here are some of the many offerings of things to do and see while visiting Luling.
