Stack Emblems. . Experienced ship-spotters can tell the difference between seemingly identical ships with just a glance. How? Every shipping line uses unique hull colors, fleet flags, and markings on their smokestacks to identify their boats. In 1900, 3000 boats owned by hundreds of shipping companies plied the Great Lakes. Although many of those fleets are now gone, current boat owners continue the practice. Like any corporate branding effort, the identifying markings often change over time. These stack emblems come from Columbia Steamship Company boats which were owned by Oglebay Norton, representing the brand from the 1950s to the 1990s.
