Inscription. While Schoonmaker was originally launched with 35 telescoping hatches, she was re-configured in 1942 to employ this 6 1/2 TON NORTHERN ENGINEERING WORKS Hatch Crane and now has 18 hatches.

This crane rides up and down the ship's deck along the white rail tracks by your feet to lift hatch covers and gain access to the cargo hold when loading or unloading.

Each hatch cover weighs over 6 tons and resides upon what is referred to as the hatch combing. Numerous hatch clamps tighten the cover onto a rubber gasket to ensure watertight integrity at sea. When conducting cargo operations the covers are lifted with the crane's two hooks, and placed between the hatches.

Please proceed towards the stern and stop at the first cabin of the aft house or 1st Assistant Engineers Cabin. (Marker Number 2.)
