1. Olson-Slaabakken Cabin Marker
Inscription.
This cabin was donated by
Emmet Olson
in 1927 to this park.

Built prior to 1860, the cabin was the home of these Norwegian settlers who underwent the Indian massacre of Aug. 24, 1862, in Belmont Twp. north of Jackson. Sioux raiders killed 13 pioneers and wounded three others including Anders E. Olson Slaabakken, father of Emmet Olson, who was shot and knifed but survived.
The "Belmont Massacre" was part of the Great Sioux Uprising in which over 800 whites were killed in the Midwest within a week.
