Inscription. In 2004, Lake Herman State Park received funding from the South Dakota State Historical Society through a Deadwood Fund Grant to restore this structure. Built in 1871, it was originally the home of the Herman Luce family. Through the years it housed many other families until, in 1945, the State of South Dakota became owner of the land and created Lake Herman State Park.

The Deadwood Fund grant program is funded by a portion of the gambling revenue generated in Deadwood, SD, and is distributed by the State Historical Society as matching grants to recipients statewide.
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks provided the basis of the matching funds, with the supplemental match coming from various local organizations and individuals. It is through the generosity of these organizations and individuals that this project was possible.

Our deep appreciation goes out to everyone who assisted with this project, whether donating money, time, cabin furnishings, materials or labor.

The Luce Historic Cabin is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. All restoration was completed through required guidelines. This structure will continue to stand as a reminder of the strength and dedication of the pioneers who first homesteaded Lake County, South Dakota.
