Byward Market in Ottawa, Ontario — Central Canada (North America)
Mile of History / Le Mille Historique
The restored shopfronts along the east side of Sussex Drive are relics of businesses that served the lumber trade in the Ottawa Valley, where wood was king in the 19th century. Forest industries turned old Ottawa into a boom-and-built mill town and the shops on this street into bustling centres of commerce. After a hard winter felling timber in the woods, lumberjacks collected their pay and set out to have some fun. For many, that meant celebrating in the taverns on Sussex Street, a commercial artery in Ottawa's Lower Town.
